Give 30 is an amazing initiative inspired by Ramadan that aims to help fellow Canadians that don’t have enough to eat.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Every day during this month, Muslims around the world spend the daylight hours in a complete fast.

Here are 30 facts about the movement that you may not know!

  1. Ramadan is a time of year when people voluntarily go without food and drink in daylight hours to build empathy with those in need, and hopefully ease some of their burdens.
  2. Ziyaad Mia founded Give 30 in 2012 
  3. Ziyaad wanted to celebrate the spirit of Ramadan by encouraging people to fight hunger during the annual month of fasting.
  4. 11 Canadian food banks are involved 
  5. Give 30 has evolved from helping one food bank to raising funds for food banks across the country
  6. Since 2012 the effort has raised$725,214 for food banks in Canada 
  7. 43% of people that use the food bank make less than $1000 per month
  8. 1/3 of people that use food banks in Toronto are children
  9. 40% of clients have a long term disability or illness
  10. North York Harvest Food Bank serves over 16,000 people each month  
  11. 29% of clients are diabetic
  12. 20% of people using the food bank are single parent families
  13. Over half of the people that use a food bank are single people 
  14. NYH supports 77 community programs in Toronto
  15. Summertime is a low point for food bank donations & Give 30 is a great way to help our neighbours in need during the warmer months
  16. Give 30 is open to everyone – a person does not have to observe Ramadan to donate to food banks through the campaign.
  17. You don’t need to fast to participate
  18. Give 30 encourages everyone to participate in the campaign. Whether it be giving up your morning cup of coffee or bringing lunch from home instead of buying it – you can donate your savings to the food bank.  
  19. You can get involved as an individual or with a team such as friends, family or coworkers
  20. The campaign is entirely volunteer run 
  21. Monetary donations are used by North York Harvest to ensure community members receive more fresh food with your donation
  22. Give 30 has celebrity ambassadors such as Movie/TV Star Zaib Shaikh, football star Obby Khan, & Zarqa Nawaz, Author and Creator of Little Mosque on the Prairie
