The North York Harvest Food Bank is looking for candidates to join our Board of Directors

North York Harvest is looking for candidates to join our dynamic Board of Directors.  If you have passion for our vision of a community where all members are able to meet their food needs, this may be the volunteer position for you.  We are seeking candidates for board terms effective February 2019, however, ideally, we would like to have candidates start sooner and participate on committees.

North York Harvest is one of the largest food banks in Toronto.  An independent, charitable organization, we distributed over 2 million pounds of food last year through 77 neighbourhood programs.  Each month, we provide emergency food assistance to over 16,000 people living in northern Toronto, an area bounded by Hwy. 27, Steeles Avenue, Victoria Park Avenue, and St. Clair Avenue/Eglinton Avenue.

The future promises to be an exciting one for North York Harvest with a focus on providing dignified food assistance to people in need, raising public awareness, engaging the community and advancing long term food solutions.

The Board of Directors plays a central role in this important work.  The Board uses a modified policy governance model to structure and guide its governance role.  Policy governance emphasizes vision and values, the empowerment of both board and executive director, and the strategic ability to lead.

It is the responsibility of board members to prepare for and to attend board meetings and participate in one of three standing committees. This will usually entail ten meetings in a calendar year plus committee meetings.

We are specifically interested in hearing from experienced candidates with an understanding and a passion for social services, social justice or food justice. Ideal candidates will also bring one or more of the following skills:

  • Human resources experience
  • Experience working in or with government
  • Experience in community development
  • Direct experience with food security or poverty reduction
  • Direct connection to the north Toronto catchment area

If you are interested in this opportunity, please submit your resume to Josh Neubauer, Chair of the Governance and Nominating Committee, at
