My life has changed so much in the last year. And believe it or not, it’s because of you and the North York Harvest community.
Last year I lost my job. I am a father and my kids are the most important part of my life. When I didn’t know how to provide for them, I panicked. It’s my job to make sure they have what they need, and when I got laid off, for the first time in their lives, I wasen’t sure how I was going to make ends meet.
Luckily, I was referred to my local food bank. And that visit changed my life.
The support I found there made sure my family didn’t go hungry, even when times were tight.
While I’m so grateful for the food I received at the food bank, I knew it wouldn’t be enough to keep my family going in the long term. I needed to find another way. So when my service worker mentioned there was a program called Leadership in Logistics that offered free warehouse training, I was excited to enrol.
I had no idea that the training program would be in a food bank. The Leadership in Logistics program gave me a chance to gain industry standard certifications and hands-on training in a professional warehouse environment.
Did you know that North York Harvest collects and distributes over 2 million pounds of food a year? That makes it a really busy space that rivals the volume of many businesses, giving me the experience I needed to find work in a new field. I was trained on the same equipment used in workplaces all over the city. The added bonus? I knew I was helping to make sure families like mine got the help they needed, too. In fact, the very first delivery I went on was to the food bank my own family had used. I can’t tell you what it meant to me to be able to give back to a space that had given me so much.
When I completed the program, I found stable work that made it possible to give my family a strong foundation. And I’m not alone, over 90% of graduates go on to find work in the field.
I want you to know it all started because someone like you decided to give. The support of this community made sure my kids never had to miss a meal, while I focused on gaining the experience I needed to make sure I could take care of them in the long term.
That support is more important now than ever before, as more and more of our neighbours find themselves struggling to put food on the table. And when you make a gift to make sure a family can make ends meet, your impact doesn’t stop there. The food each donation provides at the food bank is the bridge for families like mine to find the support we need to learn new skills, make new friends and live healthier lives.
A huge thanks to everyone who’s pledged their support to North York Harvest for making sure I could be there for my kids.
