As a resident of North York, Jessica has witnessed food insecurity becoming one of the greatest challenges facing her community.

Through her work in the charitable sector and in the classroom with children, she’s seen how not having enough to eat can affect every part of a person’s life, especially a child’s ability to learn and thrive on a day-to-day basis. She knows food insecurity touches people from every background, and with the rising cost of living, more families than ever are struggling to put healthy food on the table.

“I was inspired to support North York Harvest after seeing one of their campaigns on social media,” says Jessica. “Knowing the incredible work they do in my own community, it felt like a meaningful opportunity to help neighbours who may be facing difficult circumstances.”

Jessica chose to make her gift through a donor-advised fund.

What is a donor-advised fund?

A donor-advised fund (DAF) is a simple, flexible way to manage your charitable giving. You make a contribution to a DAF and receive a charitable tax receipt at the time of your contribution. You can then decide when and where you’d like the money to be donated to eligible charities.

DAFs can make giving more flexible because you can contribute when it works for you, then support different charities over time. They can also make charitable giving simpler by allowing you to manage your giving through one account, rather than making and tracking individual donations each time.

A seamless giving experience

Jessica says she used to assume DAFs were only for people with significant wealth, but providers like GiveWise have shown her how accessible and flexible they can be. She likes having one place to organize her charitable priorities — keeping track of the causes she cares about, setting up recurring support, and planning her giving throughout the year

North York Harvest aims to make the process of giving through a donor-advised fund straightforward and simple for compassionate people like Jessica.

“My experience has been seamless,” says Jessica. “If you’re considering supporting North York Harvest Food Bank this way, I would encourage you to do so.”

Thank you for taking the time to learn about new and meaningful ways to help our neighbours access fresh, healthy food.
