Ahead of the municipal election on October 26, North York Harvest Food Bank held a community fair to get out the vote!
Hosted in partnership with NOTICE at our Lawrence Heights Community Food Space on October 9, this event was a community celebration to draw attention to the fact that all of our voices matter, and deserve to be heard.
In the last municipal election, voter turnout in Eglinton-Lawrence was 31.6%. Every year, our elected officials make decisions that can impact people living in poverty the hardest, yet those same people often face more barriers to participating in the electoral process.
That’s why we partnered with Voice the Vote, Toronto Public Library, Social Planning Toronto, and more to provide non-partisan voter information and community resources. Attendees learned about what they would need in order to cast their ballot, practice voting at a mock ballot box, and where they could vote during advanced voting, and on voting day.

We also arranged free transportation for Ward 8 Eglinton-Lawrence residents to advanced polling stations to remove barriers to the voting process.
Throughout the day, 200 people stopped by to celebrate civic engagement with food, games, prizes, live music, and more!
We know more food won’t solve food insecurity, but public policy can. Participating in the electoral process is one of the ways we can meaningfully move the dial on the affordability crisis — so no one needs to turn to a food bank.
Thank you to everyone for joining us and helping make the day so fun and impactful!
