Flor, Lawrence Heights Community Food Space

This Thanksgiving, no one should be priced out of fresh food.

Eating well shouldn’t be something you have to budget for. For many of our neighbours in Toronto, it is.

Flor is one of them. She’s a senior who makes green juice every morning. Spinach, pineapple, ginger. The Vitamin A from the spinach. The Vitamin C from the pineapple. The Vitamin B6 from the ginger. It’s how she keeps her aging body healthy.

She has surgery coming up, and she’s already worried about being able to afford the fresh food she’ll need to recover.

It’s a familiar moment for a lot of families stretching a tight budget: the fresh vegetables go back on the shelf, and the frozen bag goes in the cart instead. When every dollar is already spoken for, fresh food is often the first thing to go.

For Flor, that trade-off isn’t occasional. It’s every week. And she’s not alone.

At North York Harvest Food Bank’s community food spaces, Flor doesn’t just receive food. She gets to choose it.

For every $1 you give right now, The Sprott Foundation adds $4. Every donation goes five times further, until October 31.

Across Toronto, families are making the same calculation every week. A young mother deciding which groceries to leave behind. A child whose lunch doesn’t have what their growing body needs. A senior choosing between medication and the food that helps it work.

At North York Harvest’s community food spaces, people get to choose the fresh fruits, vegetables, dairy, and protein that’s right for them and their family. The same way any of us would at the grocery store. That dignity matters.

That choice shouldn’t be a privilege. Your gift helps keep it within reach.

This Thanksgiving, neighbours like Flor will walk through our doors and choose the fresh food they need. The spinach for her green juice. The protein for her recovery. The carrots that help a child grow. The turkey that brings a family to the table.

Your gift makes that possible. Five times over until October 31st.
